Montréal
2006 Adds Two New Sports!
After
the huge success of the Beach
Volleyball tournament presented
during the Rendez-Vous
in the Village, Bronze Edition
last September, the Sports Department
decided to add this sporting discipline
to the official games programme. Matches
will be held in beautiful Jeanne-Mance
Park at the foot of Mount Royal. The park
is well known to Beach Volleyball enthusiasts
who use the site regularly for competitions.
Dragon Boat
Racing has also been added to the official
games programme. This fast-growing and
increasingly popular sport is enjoying
great success around the world. Competitions
will be presented in the renowned Olympic
Basin of Montréal. The Montréal 2006 Organising
Committee has the full support of the
local Kraken club as well as that of the
Montréal Dragon Boat Race Festival Organising
Committee.
The
International Gay & Lesbian Athletics
Conference (Boston)
The
Rendez-Vous Montréal 2006 team attended
the Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation
(GLAF) conference in Boston where the workshop
on the 2006 games in Montréal was a great
success. Mark Tewksbury (Co-President) and
Josée Généreux (Sports Director) unveiled
the new additions to the sports programme
and delivered a presentation with images
of the various competition sites to be used
during the games. A general overview of
recent developments along with latest news
on preparations for the games were also
presented.

The
Tour Continues
Mark Tewksbury,
Co-President, and Josée Généreux, Sports
Director, continued their world tour of
sports teams. Teams in Vancouver, Calgary
and Toronto were visited in February.
The pair also attended the annual assembly
of the EGLSF (European Gay & Lesbian
Sport Federation) in March.
If your team would like
to organize a visit from Mark Tewksbury
or Josée Généreux, please email us at
sport@montreal2006.org.
New
Faces
The
department now has three new coordinators
for the sports and Outreach programmes:
Caroline Ayotte, Éric Pineault and Sylvain
Guibord. The team is currently completing
the sanction process with various sports
federations and is working in close collaboration
with our sports partners. |

Creation
of GLISA and the World OutGames |
|
|
|
Agreement
with the EGLSF |
|
In Boston
on March 27, 28 and 29, GLISA (Gay and
Lesbian International Sports Association)
was born.
Over
the last six months, the groundwork was
laid for the creation this international
association thanks to the efforts of over
one hundred gay and lesbian sports teams
around the world.
In
January of this year, a Think Tank was
organised in Montréal during which about
twenty representatives of sports teams
and of the GLBT sporting community in
general decided to begin consultations
with various sports teams around the world.
The reponse was overwhelmingly in favour
of the creation of a new international
body providing services to athletes and
teams. As a result of these consultations,
the founding assembly of GLISA was held
in Boston this weekend.
The
founding assembly also announced that
GLISA will immediately begin negotiations
with Rendez-Vous Montréal 2006 to sign
a partnership agreement for Montréal to
host the first World OutGames. |
|

|
|
On
4 March, Rendez-Vous Montréal 2006 signed
an agreement with the EGLSF (European
Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation)
outlining provisions for the exchange
of information on the successful organisation
of sporting competitions. This agreement
also provides for the promotion of the
Montréal games by the EGLSF at the various
European sports activities it coordinates
each year.

Organisers
of VIIe
Festival International GALA Choruses,
to be held 17 to 24 July, 2004, in Montréal
(Québec), Canada, already have more that
5,000 registrants for the festival. This
marks the highest number of advance registrations
of any GALA Choruses quadrennial festival.
The beautiful
performance facility of Place des Arts
will be the sight of formal concerts presented
by the more than 5,000 delegates expected
to attend the eight-day festival. The
festival will also offer an Exposition
at Complexe Desjardins and special community

of the choruses and ensembles registering
have come from the U.S.A. (84%) and Canada
(13%). Other countries including the U.K.,
France, Germany, Ireland and South Africa,
will be represented. Choruses are comprised
primarily of women's choruses (22%), mixed
men's and women's choruses (29%) and men's

range from a quartet to more than 200
singers. Performances deliver powerful
messages about social justice and the
lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual transgender
people. Many new works commissioned by
choruses will be debuted at the festival. |
|

Rendez-Vous Montréal 2006
and Gala Choruses have signed an exclusive
agreement to have the choral association

Improvements
to the Gay Village |
|
The City of
Montréal has just announced that, in anticipation
of the Rendez-Vous Montréal 2006 Gay Sport
and Cultural Festival, the city's Gay
Village will be the focus of a major revitalization
project. Located in the heart of the city,
the Gay Village will be the center of
cultural and tourist activities for the
7 days of the Rendez-Vous Montréal 2006
event. This neighbourhood has seen significant
development over the past 15 years and
has become one of the most visited areas
of the city by tourists in general. Filled
with charming restaurants, terraces, theatres,
book stores and trendy bars, this vibrant
community will also be the location of
the new Bibliothèque nationale du Québec
(National Library of Québec). Part
of the revitalisation project includes
improvements to buildings on Sainte-Catherine
Street, the city's oldest urban thoroughfare
which bisects the Village from west to
east.
