More
than 350 sports
clubs registered

reaching near
60% capacity
The
Sport Department
of the Montréal
2006 Organising
Committee is
very pleased
with the way
registrations
continue to
progress with
less than a
year to go before
the 1st
World Outgames.
There
are currently
more than 6,500
people registered
for the Outgames
coming from
90 different
countries. Compared
with the numbers
from the Sydney
Games, “with
less than a
year to go before
the event, we
have a 25% lead
on registrations,”
according to
Michel Langelier,
the Outgames’
Sport Director.
Places
are filling
up quickly for
the Outgames,
with some particularly
popular disciplines
fast reaching
their maximum
capacities.

way are:

GLISA |

Bravo
to Montréal
2006!
The
Board of GLISA
would like to
congratulate
the team at
Montréal
2006 for the
extraordinary
delivery of
the recent Labour
Day program
of events. The
professionalism
of the Organising
Committee, the
unprecedented
support from
public officials
and Montrealers
as well as the
enormous presence
the 1st World
Outgames already
has in the city
a year before
the event left
us all with
the feeling
that Montréal
2006 will be
an unforgettable
experience next
year.

Executive
Committee News
The recently
elected Inaugural
Board has shared
that excitement
worldwide upon
returning home,
and following
our first Board
meeting on 15
September, has
adopted the
Strategic Plan
for 2006 and
formed the Committees
needed to fulfill
the delivery
of our vision.
Of the six working
committees,
Membership Services,
Sport Technical
and Finance
are the three
mandated with
the most deliverables.
GLISA will continue
to be a member-based
organisation
with a focus
on sharing best
practices and
create a sound
financial future
for LGBT sport
worldwide.

Hockey
players from
Colorado are
heading to the
Outgames!
The Colorado
Gay Ice Hockey
Association
(CGIHA) announced
in a press release
on 14 September
that their members
unanimously
voted to attend
the 1st World
Outgames in
Montréal
next summer,
from 29 July
to 5 August
2006. The Denver-based
organisation
will bring 3
co-ed teams
and 2 women’s
teams, for a
total of 75
athletes.
“Athletes
across the nation
are faced with
deciding between
the competing
events, which
take place just
one week apart
in July 2006.
The CGIHA athletes’
decision was
both practical
and political.
The Montréal-based
Les Dragons
Ice Hockey Club
and the larger
gay and lesbian
community have
extensive experience
in organising
ice hockey tournaments.
Montréal
is widely regarded
as having hosted
very successful,
financially
solvent, and
well-organised
sports and cultural
events like
the recently
completed FINA
swim championships,
the Black &
Blue Festival,
and the summer
Pride Week celebration,”
wrote the Denver-based
organisation
in its release.

The
Melbourne Argonauts
The
Melbourne
Argonauts
announced yesterday
that they are
gearing up for
Montréal
2006 and the
1st
World Outgames.
Currently, 20
Argonauts are
registered to
make the journey
from Melbourne
to Montréal.
Their members
decided to have
their principal
focus on Montréal
because the
rowing will
be held in the
Olympic Basin
(used for the
1976 Olympics),
a fully buoyed
international
standard course
and the Outgames
regatta will
also be listed
in the FISA
calendar - a
"first"
for a queer
regatta.
“My
experience in
Montréal
showed me that
they have great
facilities,
that they are
incredibly organised
and have huge
support from
the city, provincial
and federal
governments.
There is a feeling
in the city
that is very
special, especially
for an LGBT
person. There
are banners
already up in
the streets
for the event
next year, there
is a buzz throughout
the city for
the Outgames,
and from the
Mayor to the
customs officials
to restaurant
owners, the
city knows we
are coming and
can't wait to
host us. Canada
is a world leader
right now in
the advancement
of LGBT rights,
and combined
with Montréal's
openness and
flair for hosting
world-class
festivals, it
seems to be
becoming THE
place to be
next year,”
said Peter Sagar,
from the Melbourne
Argonauts.

Choral
Festival
Preparations
for the Choral
Festival
are well underway.
The interest
the event has
attracted so
far gives every
indication that
the 1st
World Outgames
will welcome
choral groups
from all five
continents:
North and South
America, Europe,
Oceania and
Asia. Montréal
2006 has concluded
agreements with
the two largest
LGBT choral
associations,
Gala
Choruses,
the Gay and
Lesbian Association
of Choruses,
and Legato,
Lesbians and
Gays Singing
Together. These
two associations
are providing
support, both
in the organisation
and the promotion
of the Festival.
As part of this
collaboration,
an Outgames
representative
was in Kansas
City from 2
to 4 September
for the GALA
Choruses 2005
Annual Conference.
Montréal
2006 will also
attend the Legato’s
Annual Conference
in Berlin in
October.
Getting
into the sporting
spirit of the
Outgames, Montréal
2006 will include,
in addition
to performances,
the opportunity
for choral groups
to participate
in a competitive
component of
the Choral Festival.
Based on the
model of sporting
events, gold,
silver and bronze
medals will
be awarded by
a jury at the
end of the competitions.
Singers
who are not
part of a chorus
or who belong
to a chorus
that is not
participating
in the Outgames
may register
on an individual
basis. In fact,
depending on
demand, Montréal
2006 has planned
to form up to
three mass choruses
made up of individual
registrants.
Those who register
will enjoy at
least 10 hours
of workshops
and rehearsals
with an invited
artistic director
in preparation
for a performance
in the closing
concert of the
Choral Festival.
The names of
these invited
artistic directors
will be announced
in the next
Club Montréal
2006 Enews newsletter.

Call
for Proposals:
International
Conference on
LGBT Rights
"The
Right to Be
Different",
the largest
ever International
Conference
on lesbian,
gay, bisexual
and transgender
rights, with
2,000 participants
from around
the world, will
be held in Montréal
on from 26 to
29 July 2006,
just before
the 1st
World Outgames.
With the support
of the Governments
of Canada, Québec
and Montréal,
the Québec
Human Rights
Commission,
and private
sponsors and
foundations,
the Conference
will also be
the best-funded
to date. As
for the venue,
it is hard to
imagine a better
one than the
spacious and
ultra-modern
facilities of
the Palais des
Congrès,
Montréal's
convention centre.
The
purpose of the
Call for Proposals
by the International
Scientific Committee
that is organising
the content
of the Conference
is to solicit
proposals for
the workshops.
Allowing 3 or
4 speakers per
90-minute workshop,
there should
be somewhere
between 1,100
and 1,500 speaking
slots. Thus,
it is expected
that the majority
of the 2,000
participants
will speak in
a workshop.
Proposals are
welcome from
any person who
is interested
in the goal
of equality
for LGBT persons,
regardless of
their sexual
orientation
or gender identity.

Proposals
